London calling (1 of 1).jpg

Welcome to my website.

For me, photography is as much about observation as it is about expression. I’m drawn to the immediacy of the street, and try to seek out fleeting moments that tell a story or hold an aesthetic resonance, whether through bold colour or the quiet strength of black and white. With my street photography and my long-exposure images I’m trying to blur the line between photography and painting.

Capturing a key moment in time requires quick thinking and being ready to respond to your surroundings. Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photography often centred on the “decisive moment” and the relationship between your eye, heart and head when taking a picture. My photographs mostly move between the three intentions: to capture a moment, tell a story and explore aesthetic beauty.

I’m drawn to vibrant colours, shifting light and the drama of shadows, and take pictures that capture the immediacy of life on the street and the quiet poetry of reflective landscapes.

I’m always searching for light, shadow and backgrounds that either connect with or contrast against the subject, creating photographs that are atmospheric and alive with detail.

My photography has developed with more focus on documenting issues around social justice. In 2019 I achieved my LRPS (Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society) and in 2023 my ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society). My successful ARPS panel focused on women and allotments and was featured in the Royal Photographic Society’s Documentary Group’s ‘Decisive Moment’ magazine, in April 2024, Edition 29: https://issuu.com/documentarygrouproyalphotographicso/docs/rps_the_decisive_moment_april_2024_edition_29/54?e=73&o=1

In October 2025, I was the featured Artist in Residence for Leamington Studio Artists, showcasing my atmospheric colour and black-and-white photographs: https://lsa-artists.org/artist-spotlight-mark-godfrey/

In the summer of 2025, I was a founding member of Warwickshire Photographers’ Collective, with the aim being to support local community groups to amplify their voices and celebrate stories through photography. We currently have a number of projects we are working on.

I am currently working towards my FRPS (Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society), developing a documentary project centred on community, wellbeing and people’s connection to the natural environment. The work focuses on a gardening group run by a community interest company exploring how shared activity, companionship and time spent outdoors can reduce isolation and create a stronger sense of belonging and purpose.

Dorothea Lange believed that true documentary photography requires a strong personal perspective, profound respect for the people whose photographs you take and that you need to be emotionally involved. She said “a great photograph is one that fully expresses how one feels, in the deepest sense about what is being photographed”.

This philosophy strongly informs my current work, where I am building genuine connections with the gardening group and people that I photograph, being a member of the group and involved rather than simply observing it from the outside.

Constantine Manos said “it’s easy to take good pictures, difficult to take very good pictures and almost impossible to take great pictures”. I’m continually learning, with the aspiration of one day taking a great picture.

Whether in the energy of the street or in the stillness of a long exposure, the calm of the countryside or the emotionmy documentary work, my aim is to take pictures that invite you to look again….and again.

We are all constantly looking for inspiration, but the most important thing is to keep practising and taking pictures. I hope that you enjoy viewing mine.
